Outtake: Jesse Thorn on How to Eat Burritos (NSFW)

(download)

Jesse Thorn loves burritos, as he made clear when he joined us for this week's show. He has strong opinions on the best way to make them and the best way to eat them, as evidenced by the rather novel analogy he chose to describe his method of burrito consumption. Of course, your faithful hosts had no idea what he was talking about. (Note: We'd rate this clip at PG-13.)

Passover Outtake: Manischewitz Wine

Here's an outtake from this week's Passover show. Manischewitz red wine is traditionally served at Jewish holidays. It actually has sugar added to it, making it like the shirley temple of the wine world -- so sweet, only a kid could like it. Well, maybe not ONLY a kid. /dan

Outtake: Caller Pat's Toast Technique

Bread_stack

In this week's show we took a call from Pat in Ohio, who had a hard luck tale with a happy ending, and a cookie recipe to boot. We didn't have time to include his technique for keeping toasted bread crispy before assembling a sandwich, which was also covered in the call. So here it is, complete with photo! /dan

Cassie Still Pulls for Butler in Final Four

(download)

We're putting together two audio episodes and a video on Girl Scout Cookies. As we mentioned, we got our large batch of cookies from Cassie, daughter of our fellow NPR Bryant Park Project alum Tricia McKinney. We talked to both of them and you'll hear their take on cookies soon.

But we also talked about March Madness with Cassie. Back in 2008, she made the bold prediction that Butler University would have an improbable run all the way into the finals of the NCAA basketball championship. She was technically wrong then, but later proven to be ahead of her time, as the underdog Bulldogs have now shocked doubters twice by making it to the Final Four two years in a row.

So what is it about Butler that draws Cassie? It's not an affinity for mid-majors or something Dick Vitale told her. More than anything else, it's in the sound, as you'll hear in this clip. /mark

Mysteries of Dan's Tongue (Outtake)

(download)

Dan says he's no fan of sparkling water in our newest episode. I think he's missing out on the joys of seltzer, club soda and all water that sparkles and fizzes. In this bit that didn't make it into the podcast, we debate whether he may have dark, unknown issues disabling him from the joy of seltzer. The word I was looking for, by the way, was synesthesia. Oops. /mark

Sun Tea (Outtake)

(download)

Our tea conversation (Part 1 and Part 2) covered a lot of ground, but even with two episodes to fill, there were several good exchanges that didn't quite fit. Here, we discuss the gimmicky oddity that is sun tea with Jacob Ganz (formerly at NPR's Bryant Park Project with us, now at NPR's The Record music blog).

Are you ready for snow tea? We are. Take a listen. /mark

Dan's Tea Bag Mastery (Outtake)

(download)

Since we posted Part 1 of our Tea conversation with Jacob Ganz (formerly at NPR's Bryant Park Project with us, now at NPR's The Record music blog), Dan's been taking some abuse for his support of bagged tea over loose tea. Serious tea drinkers like Jacob accuse Dan of ignorance (teagnorance?) for declining the pleasures of loose tea on grounds of convenience and accusations of pretentiousness.

This clip didn't quite fit into the episode, but it's worth a listen because you'll see that even though Dan supports bag tea, his tea bag technique is unparalleled. And as you listen to his detailed, learned talk about the tea bag world, please, folks, try to keep your mind out of the gutter.

In it, we pose the question, what is the string on a tea bag called. Leash? Stylus? Does anyone know? /mark

Meet the Bitter Elves Behind Your Tea's Taste

(download)

We had a lot of fun talking tea with fellow BPP alum Jacob Ganz (now of NPR's The Record music blog). Part 1 is up now and the second half will go up next week. But even after making two whole episodes, we still had a few fun exchanges that didn't quite fit in either. Here's one that in barely a minute, somehow manage to touch on steeping technique, tannins, elves and Iceland. /mark
